Lots of changes have taken place in Accrington over the last Fifty years. The Lead Image is from the Lancashire Evening Telegraph Archive.
The Classic Cinema
Firstly the Classic Cinema in the bottom left has been replaced by a new building. This cinema opened in 1937 as the Regal, it was renamed the Odeon in 1945. Another name change followed in 1967 when it became the Classic. Consequently, in 1973 it became a three-screen cinema. By 1990 audiences were dwindling and the building was demolished.

St Johns Ambulance Hall
Another lost building was the St John’s Ambulance Hall. The Hall can be seen in the middle left in the 1970’s photo. The building was demolished to create the roundabout in the 1980s. The building was opened in 1904 and later became a snooker club where famous players John Spencer and Dennis Taylor trained.
Corn Mill Hyndburn Road
In the 1970s photo, the building just above the viaduct on the left was a corn mill.
